What Is Resilience and Why Does It Matter More Than Ever?
Imagine two people facing the exact same challenge.
Both lose a major client. Both receive disappointing news. Both experience a setback in their health, career, or personal life.
One person becomes overwhelmed, loses confidence, and struggles to move forward.
The other feels the disappointment too, but gradually adapts, regroups, and finds a way forward.
What’s the difference?
The answer is often resilience.
Resilience Is More Than “Being Tough”
Many people think resilience means being mentally tough, never struggling, or simply “pushing through.”
In reality, resilience is much more than that.
Resilience is the ability to adapt positively to stress, challenges, setbacks, and change. It’s our capacity to recover, learn, and continue moving forward when life doesn’t go according to plan.
Being resilient doesn’t mean you never experience stress or difficult emotions. It means you have the tools, habits, and mindset to navigate them effectively.
The good news?
Resilience is not something you’re simply born with. Like fitness, strength, or endurance, resilience can be developed and strengthened over time.
Measuring Resilience
Most of us have a fairly good idea of our physical fitness.
We know whether we can walk 5km comfortably, climb a flight of stairs without getting out of breath, or complete a workout.
But how often do we stop and assess our mental and emotional fitness?
This is where the Resilience Quotient Inventory (RQi) comes in.
The RQi is a scientifically developed assessment designed to measure resilience and wellbeing.
It helps individuals understand the beliefs, behaviours, habits, and coping strategies that influence how effectively they respond to life’s challenges.
Rather than simply giving you a score, the assessment provides insight into the specific areas that contribute to resilience and highlights both strengths and opportunities for growth.
Think of it as a fitness assessment for your resilience.

The Six Building Blocks of Resilience
The RQi looks at six key areas that research has shown contribute to resilience.
1. Purpose & Fulfilment
2. Positive Mindset
3. Supportive Relationships
4. Managing Problems
5. Managing Emotions
6. Managing Physiology

Why Resilience Matters
Life isn’t getting less demanding.
Work pressures, family responsibilities, financial challenges, information overload, and constant change are realities many people face every day.
Resilience helps us:
Manage stress more effectively
Maintain perspective during challenges
Recover more quickly from setbacks
Improve overall wellbeing
Strengthen confidence and self-belief
Stay focused on meaningful goals
Research consistently shows that resilient individuals tend to experience higher wellbeing and cope more effectively with adversity.
Resilience Can Be Trained
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of resilience is that it isn’t fixed.
Just as muscles become stronger through consistent training, resilience grows through intentional habits and experiences like, Spending time in nature, Exercising regularly, Building supportive relationships, Learning healthier ways to respond to stress and more.
Over time, these actions create a stronger foundation for wellbeing and performance.
Final Thoughts
Most people spend time developing their physical health, career skills, and financial goals.
Far fewer invest time in understanding their resilience.
Yet resilience influences almost every aspect of life- from how we handle pressure and setbacks to how we pursue goals, build relationships, and maintain our wellbeing.
The Resilience Quotient Inventory (RQi) provides a practical framework for understanding where your resilience is strongest and where it can be developed further.
Because resilience isn’t about avoiding challenges.
It’s about becoming the kind of person who can face them, adapt, grow, and keep moving forward.
In our upcoming Hiking Challenge in August, with the help of “SHINE- Relationships At Work”, we will not only test your resilience but develop it. REDEFINING health and wellness as a whole, HOLISTICALLY!
