Who Is Justin Swartz? The Story Behind JS Fitness

If you search Justin Swartz or JS Fitness, you might find a personal trainer in Johannesburg, a fitness community, outdoor wellness experiences, corporate wellness programmes, resilience work or people simply coming together through movement.

But JS Fitness didn't begin with a business plan.

It didn't begin with a logo, a website or a perfectly mapped-out vision.

In many ways, it began years earlier with something that has continued to shape both my life and the philosophy behind JS Fitness:

Resilience.

I'm Justin Swartz, founder of JS Fitness, a personal trainer, fitness entrepreneur, health and wellness expert and resilience coach based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Today, JS Fitness operates across three core pillars — Coaching, Tribe and Corporate Wellness.

But to understand what JS Fitness has become, you first have to understand where I come from.

Growing Up in Bokmakierie on the Cape Flats

I'm from Bokmakierie in Athlone, Cape Town, a community on the Cape Flats.

For me, resilience didn't begin as a concept I studied later in life.

I experienced it before I had a word for it.

Growing up in a community such as Bokmakierie meant becoming aware quite early that your environment could influence the direction of your life.

There was hardship around us. There were social challenges, gang violence and drug use to name a few.

There were circumstances that could easily limit how far a young person believed they could go.

When you grow up in an environment like that, you quickly understand that not everybody starts life with the same opportunities, resources or sense of possibility.

You also learn to read your environment. You learn to adapt. You learn that sometimes you have to keep moving even when circumstances around you are harsh.

Looking back now, I recognise that many of the qualities I later came to understand as resilience were already being developed during those years. Not because everything was easy and not because adversity automatically makes someone stronger. But because navigating that environment required awareness, choices, support, adaptability and the willingness to believe that your circumstances did not have to determine the entirety of your future.

That distinction is important to me.

I don't believe resilience means pretending that difficult environments don't affect people.

They do.

Resilience is about what happens next.

How do you respond?

What do you learn?

What do you hold onto?

What do you change?

And perhaps most importantly:

What do you believe is still possible for your life?

Those questions have followed me much further than Bokmakierie.

They've followed me into fitness.

Into business.

Into coaching.

Into Johannesburg.

And eventually into the work I now do around wellbeing and resilience.

Fitness Became One of My First Vehicles for Growth

I started training seriously in 2011. Initially, fitness was something I did for myself.

But over time, it began teaching me lessons that went far beyond exercise.

Discipline.

Consistency.

Patience.

Progress.

The understanding that meaningful change rarely happens overnight.

Training gave me an environment where effort and consistency created visible outcomes.

You could become stronger.

You could improve your fitness.

You could learn.

You could progress.

And those lessons started influencing the way I approached other areas of life.

My interest eventually became a career after failing Computer Science at UWC(University Of The Western Cape).

I studied Sport Fitness/Exercise Science in 2015 and began working in the fitness industry in 2016.

Over the years, I learnt a great deal about exercise programming, strength, conditioning, body composition and coaching.

But I also learnt something much bigger: Fitness is rarely just about fitness.

People might initially walk through the door wanting to lose weight, become stronger, gain muscle or improve their fitness.

But behind every goal is a person. A person dealing with work.

Family.

Pressure.

Confidence.

Setbacks.

Time constraints.

Stress.

Expectations.

And different seasons of life.

That changed the way I understood personal training.

I didn't want to simply count repetitions or hand someone a programme. I wanted to understand the person I was coaching. And that philosophy eventually became one of the foundations of JS Fitness | Coaching.

From the Cape Flats to Johannesburg

Another major test of resilience came in September 2019.

I made the decision to leave Cape Town and relocate to Johannesburg. At the time, I had a stable position within the fitness industry. Walking away from that security wasn't an easy decision.

But I had reached a point where I believed I needed to take responsibility for the direction I wanted my life to move in.

So I left.

I arrived in Johannesburg with limited capital, no savings, one suitcase, no established client base and no guaranteed income waiting for me at the end of the month. Just my then fiance, now Wife, waiting for me whom had moved from Cape Town to Johannesburg a few months prior.

There wasn't some perfectly constructed backup plan sitting behind the decision.

There was uncertainty.

But there was also belief.

When I think back to that move now, I can see the connection to where I came from.

Growing up on the Cape Flats had already taught me that your present circumstances and your future don't always have to look the same.

Moving to Johannesburg was another version of that lesson.

I had to rebuild from zero. One conversation. One client. One training session. One relationship at a time.

I began establishing myself as a personal trainer in Johannesburg, particularly within Bryanston(Virgin Active) and the broader Sandton area.

Slowly, JS Fitness started gaining momentum.

And then, only a few months later, the world changed.

When COVID Tested Everything Again

In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought much of the fitness industry to a standstill.

Gyms closed. Face-to-face personal training stopped.

The client base I had worked to build in Johannesburg largely disappeared.

I was left with only two clients.

This was only months after leaving the security of Cape Town to start again.

I could have looked at that moment as confirmation that the risk had failed.

Instead, it became another moment that required adaptation.

I moved coaching online.

I found different ways to stay connected to my then remaining 2 clients.

I learnt.

I changed.

I rebuilt.

That period strengthened an idea that had already been present throughout my life:

Resilience isn't about following one plan no matter what happens. Sometimes resilience means being willing to change the plan while remaining committed to the purpose.

That lesson changed the way I approached business.

It also changed the way I coach.

And eventually, it would become part of the wider wellness and resilience work I do today.

What Resilience Means to Me Today?

For a long time, resilience was something I understood mainly through experience.

Today, I've also had the opportunity to study(RQi Practitioner) and facilitate it more intentionally.

But the theory only gave language to something life had already been teaching me.

This is why I don't view resilience as a dramatic moment where somebody suddenly becomes strong.

I see resilience as something that develops over time.

It can be built through the way we respond to everyday pressure. Through the way we think. Through our habits. Through the relationships around us. Through our ability to adapt. Through our willingness to reflect honestly. And through learning when to keep pushing and when a different approach is required.

My understanding of resilience has also become more nuanced with time.

It isn't simply about enduring more, sometimes it means recognizing that the version of you that survived one season may need to develop differently for the next one.

That understanding now influences much of the work I do through JS Fitness.

Because physical health, mental wellbeing, lifestyle, community and resilience are far more connected than we sometimes realise.

What Is JS Fitness?

JS Fitness is a Johannesburg-based fitness and wellness brand founded by Justin Swartz.

Our purpose is to help people build healthier, stronger and more sustainable & resilient lives through coaching, community and workplace wellness.

Today, JS Fitness is built around three primary pillars:

Coaching. Tribe. Corporate.

They may operate in different spaces, but the philosophy connecting them is the same:

Health should support the way you live your life.

Coaching remains at the heart of what I do.

Through JS Fitness Coaching, we work with individuals through personal training, semi-private coaching and online coaching.

Based primarily in Bryanston, Sandton, our personal training approach begins with understanding the individual. Some clients want to lose body fat. Others want to build muscle. Some want to become stronger or improve their body composition. Others simply want to move better, feel healthier and regain consistency.

There isn't one perfect programme that works for everyone.

Good coaching requires understanding the person before designing the programme.

That is why my approach combines structured exercise with accountability, education, recovery, sustainable lifestyle habits and practical nutrition guidance.

As JS Fitness grew, something else began happening. People weren't only showing up to exercise.

They were connecting. They were hiking together. Training together. Attending experiences together. Encouraging one another. And gradually, what had started as fitness began developing into community.

That became the JS Fitness Tribe.

The Tribe represents the community side of our brand: bringing people together through movement, shared experiences and wellness.

Over the years we've created hiking challenges, boxing experiences, Pilates sessions, outdoor wellness events, functional training experiences and other initiatives designed to make fitness more social and connected.

This pillar is also deeply connected to what I believe about resilience. People often think resilience is purely individual. But community matters. Who surrounds you matters. Connection matters.

Sometimes the most valuable part of an experience isn't the exercise itself.

It's realising that you're part of something bigger.

That is why one of the ideas behind JS Fitness is:

We don't just create events. We create experiences.

The third pillar is JS Fitness Corporate Wellness.

Over time, I began noticing that many challenges individual clients experienced didn't start inside the gym. They started at work.

Stress.

Long working hours.

Poor recovery.

Low energy.

Difficulty maintaining routines.

Burnout.

A lack of movement.

The constant pressure of trying to balance professional and personal responsibilities.

This created another opportunity for JS Fitness to make an impact.

Today, we work with organizations through corporate wellness talks, employee wellness programmes, workplace activations, fitness experiences and wellbeing initiatives.

Our approach can include movement, nutrition, resilience, lifestyle education, wellness experiences and employee engagement.

The objective isn't simply to deliver another presentation employees forget by the following week.

We want to create experiences and conversations people can apply to their real lives.

For organizations looking for corporate wellness in Johannesburg or South Africa, JS Fitness can provide everything from once-off wellness talks and activations to customized longer-term wellness programmes.

More Than a Personal Trainer

I've spent more than a decade in fitness, but today I view my role differently from when I first walked into the industry. I'm still a personal trainer. I'm still a coach. But the vision has expanded.

I get to work with individuals who want to change their health. I get to create experiences where communities connect. I get to work with organizations that want to invest in their people.

And increasingly, I get to facilitate conversations around resilience, wellbeing and sustainable performance.

To me, these aren't separate careers. They're connected.

Because whether I'm coaching someone through a personal transformation, walking a trail with a group or speaking to employees inside an organization, the underlying questions are often similar:

What do you need in this season?

What is within your control?

What needs to change?

What can you realistically sustain?

And how do you keep moving forward?

Building JS Fitness

Sometimes I think about the distance between where this story began and where it is today.

I don't tell that story because I believe hardship should be romanticized. I tell it because our starting point doesn't have to be our final destination.

For me, that is one of the deepest meanings of resilience.

You acknowledge where you've been without allowing it to completely dictate where you're going.

The Next Chapter of JS Fitness

When I arrived in Johannesburg in 2019, I couldn't have predicted what JS Fitness would eventually become.

And I still don't believe the story is finished.

We're continuing to develop our coaching.

We're growing the JS Fitness Tribe.

We're expanding our corporate wellness offering.

And we're continuing to explore how movement, lifestyle, community and resilience can work together to improve people's lives.

The goal isn't simply to build a bigger fitness business. It's to build something that creates meaningful impact.

One person.

One team.

One community at a time.
